AVERAGE BREAST FEEDING TIME

What's the average breast feeding time?

5 years is normal!

Here in the U.S. moms are encouraged to breastfeed exclusively for the first 6 months. A study reported by the CDC revealed that in 2017 84.1% of moms began breastfeeding but by 6 months this number had significantly decreased to
58.4%and drops to 35.3% at 12 months.

These numbers have encouraged hospitals to provide increased education to nursing staff around the benefits of breastfeeding as well as techniques to breastfeed successfully and the detriment of introducing formula early.
Still, the narrative around societal breastfeeding needs to change. Beginning with supporting breastfeeding moms in the work place and ending the stigma around breastfeeding in public.

Much more needs to be done to help society and our culture understand that breasts are made for breastfeeding and breastfeeding is innate while deconstructing the idea that breasts are only sexual, which is learned.
