I’ve read some posts about how fundal massage is not necessary.

➡️Here’s why it’s very important:
🤰🏻During pregnancy the placenta, the organ that is formed to provide nutrients for your growing baby, is attached to the inside of the uterus. After baby is delivered, usually the cord is cut, (unless it’s a lotus birth but that’s for another post) and then the placenta is delivered.

➡️The placenta is attached to the inside of the uterus by blood vessels. When it detaches, the blood vessels in the uterus are open which is the reason why there is bleeding. When the uterus is soft, the vessels remain open. And when it contracts the vessels contract, decreasing the bleeding.

✋🏾Fundal massage, which is massaging the top of the uterus, encourages contractions therefore decreasing bleeding.

💉Pitocin (synthetic Oxytocin) is often given after birth to cause the uterus to contract. This medicine works so well that not all postpartum patients will require vigorous fundal massage for their bleeding to stay in control.

🩸But it should be checked regularly in the immediate postpartum period to decrease the risk of hemorrhage.
