The round ligament runs along both sides of the uterus. As the uterus grows, the ligaments stretch and can cause sharp pain in the lower sides of the belly or pelvis. It’s commonly felt with sudden position changes, coughing, laughing and sneezing.


  1. stretch (cat stretch)
  2. yoga
  3. acetaminophen 
  4. resting
  5. bend and flex your hips while sneezing, coughing, or laughing.
  6. heating pad
  7. warm bath

When to call the doctor:
This is a normal discomfort of a developing pregnancy but NOTE:
Any abdominal pain should be assessed by a provider and never self diagnosed.

These symptoms should be reported immediately:

  • severe pain
  • pain unrelieved
  • chills
  • fever
